Backup, Sync & Account
Your data lives on your device. Backups and an optional account keep it safe and move it between devices: export and restore a local backup file, or sign in for cloud sync.
Backup, Sync & Account
Your data lives on your device. Backups and an optional account keep it safe and move it between devices.
Backup & Restore
In the drawer, under My Profile, Data & Sync > Local Data & Backups, the Local Backup & Restore panel offers:
- Export Backup: writes everything (profiles, projectiles, locations, loads, sessions, layouts, settings) to a single backup file, photos included. A backup carrying photos is saved as a real file through the system save dialog on iOS and Android, and downloaded on the web; one without them still opens the share sheet.
- Import backup: restores from a previously exported file. Restoring replaces the current data, so export first if in doubt.
- Import data from other apps: see Importing Data.
Photos, and what is never in the cloud
Photos are never uploaded to the cloud. Target photos, saved group photos and bench rest score cards are in the backup file you export from this device, restored against the groups and scorecards they belong to, but they are not part of your cloud backup and are not sent anywhere when you sign in. A photo reaches another device only through a file you export and restore yourself.
Photos make the file much larger, which is why it is saved rather than shared as text. If your photos push a backup past the size this app can read back, the export offers to write the file without them instead.
A saved group or scorecard whose photo is missing still opens: the measurements, reference, aim point and impacts are all on the record, so it draws them over a plain stand-in target and stays editable.
Everything else is backed up, unless you exclude it below: profiles, scopes, projectiles, locations, loads, sessions, saved groups, scorecards, wind logs, layouts and settings.
Backup privacy
Backups are unencrypted, so two fields identify you rather than describe your shooting, and each can be left out. The settings apply to this device, and each destination has its own pair: the ones on Local Data & Backups cover the file you export, the ones on Cloud Sync cover your cloud backup. Set them independently, for example to strip serial numbers from a file you hand out while keeping them in your own cloud restore.
- Leave out serial numbers: your firearm serial numbers are not copied. Everything else about the profile still is.
- Leave out GPS coordinates: the latitude saved against your locations and targets is not copied. Location names, distances and weather still are. Coriolis correction needs a latitude, so on a device restored without one it falls back to no correction.
Anything left out stays on this device only: it will not come back if you restore onto a new phone. What it will not do is delete anything: a backup made with an exclusion says so, and restoring it leaves that field alone on a device that still has it, rather than blanking it.
Exporting a file also asks, each time, whether to include your saved shooting locations at all.
Account & cloud sync
The account lives in the drawer, under My Profile, Data & Sync > Profile, below your name and display settings. An account is optional; the app is fully usable without one, and it is only needed for cloud backup and sync or for the web version. Signing in adds automatic cloud backup, and what the account pays for (the plan, the backup buttons and the cloud privacy settings) is on Cloud Sync in the same group:
- Sign in with your email address: enter it, and the app emails you a six-digit code to type in. There is no password to remember or reset, and if you have not signed in before, entering the code creates your account. You can also Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.
- Once signed in, choose Add a passkey to this device to sign in future with Face ID, Touch ID, your fingerprint or your device PIN instead of an emailed code. Passkeys are listed under your account so you can remove one for a device you no longer have. Keep email sign-in as your way back in: a passkey lives on the device that created it (or in your iCloud Keychain or Google Password Manager), so a brand-new phone may not have one yet.
- While signed in, the app syncs a backup to the cloud shortly after any change, and again whenever you return to it; the cloud backup section shows when the last backup was made.
- Signing in on a new device pulls your cloud backup down. So does signing in on a device you have just cleared: a device with nothing on it never overwrites a backup that still has your data in it.
- Restore from cloud backup downloads your backup on demand, whenever you want it, instead of waiting for the app to decide which copy is newer. It replaces what is on this device, so it asks first. If your account has no backup yet it says so rather than pretending to restore.
- Sign Out stops syncing; your local data stays on the device.
- Delete Account permanently removes your account and cloud data after an explicit confirmation. Local data on the device is not deleted.
Deleting the data on this device
Delete data on this device does the opposite of Delete Account: it erases everything the app has saved here (profiles, locations, loads, sessions, saved groups, scorecards and photos) and leaves your cloud backup alone. It asks for confirmation and cannot be undone, so export a backup first if there is any doubt.
If you are signed in, this also signs you out. It has to: sync would otherwise see your cloud backup, decide this device is out of date, and download it all again. Your cloud copy is still there afterwards, so signing back in restores from it. To remove both copies, delete the local data and then delete the account (or the other way round).
